No matter where you’re traveling — a weekend road trip, international getaway, or beach staycation — it turns out that 4 in 10 Americans intentionally overpack. Yet 40% return with clothes they never wore. From the brand that brought you iconic staples like the Canvas Tote Bag, Lands’ End is bringing its signature ease to vacation styling with a cohesive collection of reversible swimwear, functional-yet-stylish layering pieces, cooling cover ups to beat the heat, and more.
The best part? All styles are designed to mix and match for endless outfit options that don’t take up an entire suitcase. Available starting June 25 with even more looks coming in July, the collection is designed to minimize overthinking (and overpacking) with thoughtfully curated vacation essentials for the entire family. Prices range from $25 to $140 for women’s apparel and swim, and the collection also offers options for men, kids, and home.
Kym Maas, Senior Vice President, Product and Merchandising, shares the secrets to avoid overpacking. Here’s what Lands’ End clothing and swimsuits you’ll want in your luggage this summer.
What’s the key to packing for vacation?
“The key to packing for vacation is to make a checklist of essential items, prioritize versatile clothing that can be used in multiple outfits, and pack light by limiting yourself to carry-on luggage if possible,” Maas says. “Personally, I always stick to packing pieces that can be worn multiple ways and ones that are both functional and stylish. I am loving this versatile Ruched Sweetheart Halter Swim Dress from our new Summer Capsule Collection, since it can be worn both in the water and out of it.”
How many bottoms and tops do you really need?
It all depends on where you’re going! “For a week-long vacation, a practical approach is to pack about 3-4 bottoms (like pants, shorts, or skirts) and 5-7 tops at most,” Maas suggests.
“To trim this number down I try to pick pieces that all fall under a similar color scheme and can be worn in multiple ways; neutrals are always easiest to mix and match, but allow for some pops of color in what you are packing to keep your outfits interesting.”
Now the age-old question — how much underwear should you pack?!
Is there a correct answer to this question? I think mine changes all the time, but usually at least two pairs for each day of the trip make their way into my bag. According to our expert, that’s basically the right answer!
“I recommend packing one pair of underwear for each day of your trip, plus a couple of extra pairs just in case,” Maas says. “For a week-long trip, this means bringing 9-10 pairs. No one wants to be doing laundry on vacation!”
What about bathing suits?
Like underwear, I typically pack a bathing suit for each day if I’m going on a trip that requires such attire. I had to ask Maas — should I be packing more or less?
“For a vacation that involves swimming or beach activities, packing 2-3 bathing suits is ideal,” Maas suggests. This seems like too few, but it makes sense!
“This allows you to rotate between them, giving each one time to dry between uses. If you’re a two-piece kind of gal, it’s always a bonus if you can mix and match tops and bottoms in your bag for even more styling options.”
For the true minimalist, Maas says “opt-in for reversal suits like this one that can not only be worn several different ways, both in and out of the water, but also act as two different suits in one!“
