Traveling back to 1925 Egypt sounds like a dream, right? Well, not for Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) and Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser), who do exactly that in the 1999 hit movie The Mummy, which ends with them fighting the now-undead title character. And even 26 years later, it seems like the two seem incapable of learning their lesson, because, according to recent reports, Weisz and Fraser are returning for a fourth Mummy movie. We share everything you need to know about the highly anticipated sequel, including what the stars have been up to since they left Egypt all those years ago, below.

What we know so far about ‘The Mummy 4’

According to several different news outlets, The Mummy 4 is officially in the works at Universal Studios. It’s reportedly going to be directed by Radio Silence—a.k.a Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella—and while there is no confirmed plot, release date or cast yet, Weisz and Fraser are reportedly going to star in it.

As of publication, neither of the stars, Radio Silence or Universal, has commented on the rumors, though back in 2022,  Fraser did say that he was open to a fourth film.

“I don’t know how it would work,” he told Variety. “But I’d be open to it if someone came up with the right conceit.”

Fraser starred in the first three Mummy films, whereas Weisz only starred in the first two, with her reason for leaving being her newborn son and an overall dissatisfaction with the script and her character. Even so, the actress has spoken very highly of the film, telling Net-A-Porter in 2023 that “Everybody in The Mummy was just brilliant.”

“When we were making it, we had no idea—we didn’t know if it was going to even sell tickets,” she continued. “It was just some alchemical thing in it, that it had charm, and charm is such a strange thing—it’s either there or it isn’t.”

What Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser have been up to since ‘The Mummy’

Since leaving The Mummy franchise, both Weisz and Fraser have continued to become Hollywood legends.

Weisz, age 55, has gone on to win an Oscar for her work in The Constant Gardener (2006) and even joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) thanks to her film Black Widow, which released in 2021.

“Melina [her character in the film] is not a cliché—she’s ambiguous. You can’t really tell if she’s got a heart, or doesn’t really have a heart, she’s definitely layered,” Weisz told Harper’s Bazaar in July of 2021. “I found her really funny on the page because she doesn’t have any sense of humour, which can make a very funny character. She’s quite deadpan and she takes things very seriously and she’s quite earnest, too.”

Fraser, on the other hand, has not joined the MCU, but he did join the Oscar train. In 2023, he won the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role award for his work in The Whale, an emotional film about an obese man who tries to connect with his teenage daughter.

“Me and my castmates gave everything we had because it was a film made during COVID and we didn’t know if there was going to be a tomorrow,” Fraser told Deadline in March of 2023. “In my view, years from now, we’re going to look back at the movies that were made [during the pandemic] and we’re going to see some kind of secret ingredient to all of them. Everyone lived under an existential threat, and a sincere concern for one another’s well-being and it’ll show in these performances.”

The first two Mummy films are currently available to stream on MGM+, and the third is currently on Amazon Prime Video. Happy hunting!
