See This Little Girl’s Viral Reaction to the Blind Barbie Doll and Try Not to Cry! Watch Video

The importance of representation in toys is evident in this heartwarming video

For decades, Barbie has been showing girls across the world that they can be anything they want to be. From doctors to gymnasts to pop stars to astronauts, the iconic children’s toy has broken barriers — and continues to do so. In recent years, the company behind the famed doll, Mattel, has taken their representation efforts even further, putting out dolls with different body types, hair types, skin tones, disabilities and more.

In a viral video circulating Reddit, it’s clear that Mattel’s efforts are making a difference. In the video, a young girl is wearing a smile ear to ear as she unboxes her brand-new Barbie Fashionistas Doll, who is blind.

The young girl is overflowing with excitement as she reads the braille included in the packaging that states, “We are Barbie, most diverse doll line.” She continues to read more of the packaging, which asks, “How do you wish to be seen? When we learn about those around us, we, in turn, learn more about ourselves.”

The video is truly heartwarming as the young girl’s excitement is palpable — and it most definitely got all its viewers in their feelings as well!

“I’m a doll collector and very much into the doll world and this makes me incredibly happy seeing a beautiful young girl have a doll that she feels represents her and is still cute and fashionable. It’s really important that we continue to make toys accessible and inclusive, and this video is an example of why,” said one Reddit commenter, emphasizing the importance of diversity in dolls and toys.

“Oh the excitement in that little girl’s voice, that was the true kicker for me!! Thank you for sharing this moment. It gives me hope for the future,” shared another, proving that representation in toys matters.

What does the Blind Barbie doll include?

The Blind Barbie Fashionista doll was rolled out in addition to the Black Barbie Fashionista Doll with Down Syndrome thanks to Barbie teaming up with the American Foundation for the Blind and the National Down Syndrome Society.

The Blind Barbie doll features a cane with a marshmallow tip used as a mobility aid, as well as a pair of sunglasses that provides protection for blind people or those with low vision who might experience sensitivity to light

The eye-gaze of the doll is also representative of blind individuals, and the doll includes textured clothing that can easily be changed into new outfits.

As for the Barbie doll with Down Syndrome, which was first introduced in 2023, this latest addition accurately depicts the physical characteristics of a person with Down Syndrome, including a distinct build and facial features. The doll also includes braided hair, clothing that includes blue and yellow (the colors representing Down Syndrome awareness), glasses and more. Needless to say, Mattel is truly capturing the diversity of the world.

The 2024 Fashionistas dolls aim to advance Barbie’s continued goal of reflecting a multi-dimensional view of beauty and fashion, allowing more children to see their world reflected through play,” said a press release from the American Foundation for the Blind.
