The Hallmark star's debut stirs up the finale—get the spoilers and season 3 scoop!
Tim Allen has long been the king of the sitcom, bringing to life beloved shows like Home Improvement, Last Man Standing and most recently Shifting Gears, which he stars in alongside Kat Dennings. With the show’s second season finale airing next week, viewers have been loving this hilarious series about a father who reconnects with his estranged daughter when she and her kids move back into his house. In addition to Allen and Dennings, the series stars Sean William Scott, Daryl Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins, Barrett Margolis, Jenna Elfman and more, but fans are perhaps most excited about the latest addition: Hallmark’s Luke Macfarlane! With his character only just being introduced with one episode left in the season, his arrival has many folks wondering if season 3 is on the way. Here, read all about Luke Macfarlane’s casting, his character and what we know about a potential third season.
What is ‘Shifting Gears’ about?
Shifting Gears premiered at the start of 2025, and the humor, comedic timing and cast chemistry reminds fans of the sitcoms we used to love. Tim Allen stars as Matt, a widower who owns a classic car shop. Matt’s routine gets shaken up, however, when his estranged daughter Riley (played by Kat Dennings) arrives with her two children, in need of a place to stay. Their complicated relationship makes for a hilarious dynamic to watch, and viewers have been loving what the cast has brought to the screen.
Luke Macfarlane joins the cast of ‘Shifting Gears’

In the most recent episode of Shifting Gears, fans were introduced to Sam, Riley’s brother and Matt’s son, whose name has been brought up countless times over the course of the series. Sam, played by Luke Macfarlane, has long been the golden child, with Matt proud of his military accomplishments. However, things take a sharp turn when Sam reveals he’s retired from his career in the Navy to pursue his passion: acting. Macfarlane has been building his resume quite a bit over these last few years, appearing in movies like Bros (2022) and series like Platonic, but perhaps what he’s best known for is his work on the Hallmark Channel. Macfarlane has been a Hallmark fixture for years, appearing in movies like Notes of Autumn (2023), Sense, Sensibility & Snowmen (2019), Taking a Shot at Love (2021) and soon, he’ll star opposite Rachael Leigh Cook in Caught By Love (2026), which premieres on February 7, available to stream on Hallmark+.
Is ‘Shifting Gears’ returning for season 3?
At this point in time, Shifting Gears has not yet been renewed for a third season. However, that doesn’t mean it isn’t on the horizon. In an interview with Urban Hollywood 411, Daryl Mitchell, who plays Stitch, commented on the possibility and teased that season 3 was likely. While he said he hasn’t explicitly heard anything about a third season, he said, “I was told to leave my stuff in the dressing room,” revealing that it was a producer who gave him this tip. While we wait for news on season 3, tune in next Wednesday to see how season 2 wraps up!
