An Astrologer’s Reading: What’s in the Stars for 4 of the Buzziest Celebrity Couples, From Taylor + Travis to exes JLo + Ben

Our resident astrologer explains JLo and Ben’s divorce drama, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s high school sweetheart-esque bond and more

Whether you’re a total Swiftie, royal watcher or just a fan of following the cinematic narratives of famous people in love, you’re far from alone if you’ve found yourself fascinated by celebrity couples. After all, speculating and schmoozing about what fuels their connection is just plain fun. And while you might get engrossed in learning about their body language or catching up on their relationship timelines, you might gather the most valuable intel from better understanding how they connect astrologically.

In astrology, the practice of synastry compares two birth, or natal, charts to pinpoint what sparks compatibility and chemistry as well as challenges and crossed wires. Here, the astrological scoop on four of the most buzzed-about celebrity couples: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck (who are, of course, soon to be divorced) as well as Kate Middleton and Prince William.

What astrology says about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s compatibility

Given that Swift is the reigning America’s sweetheart-turned-queen of pop, a lot of people are thoroughly invested in seeing the iconic Sagittarius’ happy ending with a significant other who won’t end up the subject of scathing breakup lyrics. For a while there, Swifties thought that guy was British actor and Pisces Joe Alwyn, but not long after Swift and Alwyn’s split in 2023, it was clear that the pair, who had been together since 2016, would never be getting back together. Thankfully, last summer, Swift’s super-joyful romance with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, a Libra, went public.

Kelce was born on October 5, 1989 with both his sun and Mars, the planet that oversees how we take action, in Libra, the air sign that’s diplomatic, romance-loving and partnership-oriented. Having these two celestial bodies in the same sign means that his identity, self-image and purpose are aligned with his energy and how he pursues his goals. Swift, born just a couple months later on December 13, 1989, has her north node, which speaks to her destined path toward personal growth in this life, in fellow air sign Aquarius, not too far away from Kelce’s sun-Mars conjunction in Libra, indicating that the two likely felt a natural, fated, karmic connection right off the bat, as though they’ve known one another in a past life.

And that’s not all. One of the most noteworthy strengths between their charts is the fact that Kelce’s moon, which serves as his emotional compass and speaks to how he nurtures and wants to be nurtured, is in fire sign Sagittarius, which forms a conjunction to Swift’s Sag sun. This connection is one of the best indicators of a loving, long-term relationship, because the way in which Kelce processes his emotions is aligned with Swift’s sense of self and identity. They just get one another.

And if that wasn’t enough, Kelce’s Venus, which colors his love language, matches up with Swift’s Mars, which speaks to how she experiences passion and her sex drive, in intense water sign Scorpio, a fixed sign known for staying the course once they’ve committed.

What astrology says about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s compatibility

Not since Grace Kelly has an American entertainer captivated the world by stepping into the royal spotlight by marrying a prince. From the moment former Suits star Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s relationship began making headlines, the whole globe has been obsessed with their love story.

If you were to just read about their sun signs — Meghan Markle is a Leo, born on August 4, 1981, and Prince Harry is a Virgo, born on September 15, 1984 — you might not fully understand the Sussexes’ romance, because the fixed fire sign and the mutable earth sign are semisextile, an angle that can make it tough to get on the same page. However, take a closer look at the pair’s birth charts and you notice a bevy of chemistry-spurring connections.

The pair shared a magnetic pull from the start, because Harry’s ascendant, aka rising sign, which speaks to his external self, forms a close harmonious trine to Markle’s Venus, which informs what she finds attractive.

Prince Harry’s Mars, which shows his basic energy and how he pursues his aspirations, is in fiery, wanderlust-fueled Sagittarius, forming a pleasant trine to Markle’s sun in dynamic, ambitious Leo, which colors her self-image and identity. Talk about a power couple — and one driven to take action that stems from whatever is in their hearts.

You can typically spot long-term love between a couple when one person’s Venus (the planet of love and relationships) is syncing with the other person’s Saturn (which oversees commitment). Harry’s Saturn in fixed water sign Scorpio and Markle’s Venus in mutable earth sign Virgo are closely sextile — an easygoing, friendly angle between two compatible elements. In turn, the two share a pragmatic, centering bond that both partners are mutually devoted to nurturing.

The two do share a slightly challenging aspect — Harry’s Jupiter in Capricorn squares off against Markle’s moon in Libra — that can amplify emotions and overwhelm, but, judging from their synastry, both have enough drive and grounded energy to work through any rockiness that might arise.

What astrology says about Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s compatibility

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have been making headlines for their on-again, off-again romance for over two decades. The latest sad twist: Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck on the second of the couple’s two wedding anniversaries. Born on July 24, 1969, Lopez is a Leo sun, and Affleck, born on August 15, 1972, is also a Leo. Not every sun sign has the easiest time getting along with someone who was also born under that sign, and in the case of Leo, the two likely share a love of expressing themselves creatively, working in entertainment and claiming the spotlight. They communicate similarly as well, with both born while Mercury — the planet that rules how we express ourselves and our thought processes — was in Leo, too.

Affleck and Lopez share Scorpio moons — both fall in the intense water sign. They’re pretty far from conjunct — his is at 4 degrees Scorpio, while hers is nearly in Sagittarius at 29 degrees — but sharing this placement still means they process their feelings similarly. Yet, while double Scorpion energy can make for a long-term bond, given the fixed (aka resolute) nature of the sign, it’s also quite stubborn, so the estranged couple might suffer from not syncing up emotionally as a result of shared obstinance.

The pair also shares a signature conjunction often seen between long-term lovebirds: Lopez’s Venus (which speaks to her romance style and love language) is closely conjunct Affleck’s Saturn (which points to key challenges we must tackle in this life as well as commitment) in Gemini, the mutable air sign. There’s a lighthearted tone to this planetary connection, but Gemini is also the dualistic sign of the Twins, reflecting the fact that Lopez and Affleck’s relationship has always been either all in — or not in at all.

And then there’s the fact that Lopez’s natal Mars (action, energy, sex drive), at 3 degrees Sagittarius, conjuncts Affleck’s natal Neptune (illusion, dreams, imagination) at 2 degrees Sagittarius. This whimsical, adventurous, over-the-top connection may have fueled “the greatest love story never told,” but when Neptune’s deluding influence clashes with Mars’ action-oriented reality checks, it can be difficult to find solid ground.

What astrology says about Kate Middleton and Prince William’s compatibility

Ever since they met at University of St. Andrews in Scotland in 2001, it’s been clear that Prince William and Kate Middleton were fated to fall in love and kick off a joyful new chapter together, representing the future of the royal family. Born almost six months apart — Middleton’s birthday is January 9, 1982 and the future King of England was born June 21, 1982 — their sun signs are opposite one another. She’s an industrious, pragmatic earth sign Capricorn, and he’s a heartfelt, nurturing water sign Cancer. Sharing an opposition with a significant other can cause a bit of confusion at times, but they’re also two sides of the same coin, capable of showing one another a perspective the other is looking for.

What’s more, though, is that Middleton’s sun, at 19 degrees Capricorn, forms a lovely, feel-good trine to William’s Venus (coloring his perception of romance and beauty) in another earth sign: stable, sensual Taurus, which lands at 25 degrees. This speaks to the couple’s grounded, organically loving mutual attraction and understanding.

Middleton’s moon also falls in Cancer — a little ways off from William’s sun, so not quite a conjunction — and William’s moon is in the cardinal water sign, too, making for a lot of Crab energy that speaks to the pair’s shared adoration of family, home life and caring for one another and their three children.

Another marker of a lot of chemistry: Middleton’s Venus, the planet of relationships, beauty and love languages, is tightly conjunct her Mercury (aka how she communicates) in forward-thinking, humanitarian Aquarius. And this planetary pair in her chart closely trines William’s Mars (how he takes action) in fellow air sign Libra and Mercury in also airy Gemini. The way she relates, thinks and expresses herself syncs with how he moves through the world, pursues his goals and shares his own ideas, making them quite the power couple.
