Gabriel Macht — Read About the ‘Suits’ Actor Before & After He Was Harvey Specter

Plus, is there a chance he'll be in the spinoff?

We know him as the accomplished, somewhat-arrogant lawyer Harvey Specter in the hit legal drama Suits, but there’s more to Gabriel Macht than his suave on-screen persona. The California bred actor, who made his acting debut at just 8-years-old in Why Would I Lie? (1980), has come a long way since his early days in front of a camera.

The third of four children, Macht grew up playing sports like soccer and baseball, quitting by the ninth grade and deciding to focus his energies on acting instead. Turning his youthful interest into something more than just a hobby, he went on to attend Carnegie Mellon College of Fine Arts, from which he graduated in 1994.

The actor’s time as Harvey

Macht’s most prolific role has certainly been as the hot-shot lawyer he brought to life on Suits from 2011 to 2019. The series got a bit of a revival in the past year when it began streaming on Netflix in 2023, and since then, new generations of fans have come to appreciate all that is Gabriel Macht.

Before I did Suits, I hadn’t done a series in a decade, and I only did 13 episodes of that show before going off to do movies,” he told Harper’s Bazaar in a 2017 interview.

“With a series, it’s slow turns and slow deepening of a character, and when I first approached it, I started to have Harvey change within the first season. I had to pull the brakes, because if you do it that quickly then you have nowhere to go after the first two seasons. It was a bit of a learning curve for me, the slow-burn, and then it became really exciting to play because it becomes a bit more challenging. You can deepen the character so much more than in a film.”

What has Gabriel Macht been up to?

Although Macht hasn’t acted since Suits came to an end, his life remains fulfilled. In a 2019 interview with TV Insider, Macht talked life post-Suits, which included a good dose of traveling with his family.

We invested so much of lives and as great as an experience it has been — it has been such a blessing for so many of us, including our fans who went on this journey with us — I have a real sense of freedom having now finished it,” he said.

“And I’m happy. I feel I’ve put some creative good into the world and now I want to put some creative heart, more focus and energy into [being with] my wife and my family. And explore some other interests that I might have. You know, I think when you’re in Harvey’s head for so long, you sort of split in some ways. And so I’m looking forward to being in Gabriel’s mind.”

Although nothing has been confirmed, Macht gave fans a glimmer of hope at the possibility. “I mean I think it’s in a world where some characters could in fact come [back],” he said in February 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

We can only hope!
